Use of music with premature babies in Neonatal Units in Brazil

Prematurity is a global problem, which is very common in Brazil. It can affect the baby’s development and represent a challenging experience for the family. In recent years, there has been discussion about the importance of interventions in the context of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) that promote more humanized care. Among these are music-related interventions performed by music therapists or other health professionals, especially nurses. The literature has shown positive effects of the use of music in this context, including physiological stabilization and improvement in the neurological development of newborns, in addition to the reduction of postpartum depression, stress, and maternal anxiety. However, not much is known about how this practice is carried out in Brazil. Therefore, this study investigates the use of music with premature babies in Neonatal Units. The aim is to understand whether music is used in the units, at what times, by which professionals, and what the perception of nurses and nursing technicians is regarding its use.
